Last week the representatives of Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEF) and the Vice Rector for International Relations of the Miguel Hernández University of Elche (UMH) officially confirmed the launch of a brand new cooperation agreement between the institutions.

The Lithuanians and the Spanish shall cooperate whilst working on joint projects between the existing research groups, share the best practices as well as exchange their scientific expertise, resources and technological know-how. Moreover, from now on all KTU EEF and UMH students will have the option to apply for a double degree international PhD studies in both Spain and Lithuania.

In terms of high-tech startups and spin-offs launched by its academic personnel, the Miguel Hernández University of Elche is the most productive high education institution in Spain. A great example of such spin-offs is EMXYS which has been already approved as one of the shortlisted candidates to cooperate with NASA on its project to intercept the Didymos asteroid, divert its trajectory, and learn more about the evolution of bodies over the Solar System’s history.

“Similarly to our colleagues from the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, our faculty research groups conduct a significant amount of research in the field of space engineering. We have already successfully launched such projects as the LitSat-1 satellite and at the moment our scientists are working on the design for the first remotely controlled syringe infusion system for the use in space stations and on spaceships. The overlapping scientific interests have prompted the initial contact and talks of cooperation which, in turn, have evolved into what I believe to be a highly mutually beneficial agreement,” commented the Dean of the KTU Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering prof. Algimantas Valinevicius.

By signing the new cooperation agreement the universities agreed to collaborate through their research groups specializing in the fields of electrical and electronics engineering, increase the efficiency of infrastructure and resource utilization, exchange professional expertise and technological know-how as well as share the best practices. Moreover, from now on both universities will offer their students the option to obtain an international double doctoral degree from both KTU and UMH at the same time.

“In the field of technologies the efficiency of using resources, both material and human, plays the key role in determining the outcome of many projects. In other words, it makes all the difference when it comes to a successful prototype or even a product versus a paper-based scientific publication only. That is why I am positive that our cooperation with the KTU Faculty of Electrical and Electronics Engineering will not only increase the success rate of our research projects, but also serve as a great means to exploit our laboratories, human resources and financial capabilities way more efficiently,” shared the Vice Rector for International Relations at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche prof. Vicente Micol Molina.
